⚓🚧 Major £90M Harbour Project Set to Begin! 🌊🏗️

Graham construction has been appointed as the main contractor on an ambitious £90 million project designed to transform Belfast Harbour's facilities. This new deep water port facility is set to revolutionise both the cruise ship and wind energy sectors.

The project will roll out in two major phases:

• Phase One 🛳️: Starting this week, this phase aims to complete by 2027 and will involve the construction of a new dual-purpose quay and deep water berth. The upgraded terminal will be capable of accommodating some of the world's largest cruise vessels, elevating Belfast as a key player in the global cruise industry.
• Phase Two 🌬️: Set for completion in 2030, this phase will focus on developing infrastructure for the wind energy sector, supporting sustainability and green energy initiatives.

Joe O'Neill, the Chief Executive of Belfast Harbour, highlighted that a primary goal of this project is to attract more "turnaround" cruise calls to Belfast, offering significant economic benefits to the region. The enhancements are expected to boost Belfast's position as a major cruise destination.

💼 The haul, comprising a staggering 2.7 million non-UK duty paid cigarettes, highlights the magnitude of illicit trade affecting the region. Valued at approximately £1.6 million in unpaid taxes and duties, these cigarettes were taken off the streets before entering the market.

No arrests have been made yet, but PSNI Superintendent Norman Haslett emphasised the operation's impact: "This seizure sends a powerful message to those engaged in this type of crime that it will not be tolerated. It also underlines the commitment of law enforcement agencies to combat the sale and supply of illicit tobacco products locally." 🚔

🔍 Pro Tip: A simple and cost-effective method to discourage spiders is to use a mixture of white vinegar and water. Just spray this solution in places where spiders frequently appear.

These clever creatures actually "smell" through their legs, so using strong scents is particularly effective. The acetic acid in the vinegar is the key - it’s what helps in keeping spiders at a distance. 🚫🕸️

📜 A historic letter penned by a Titanic passenger just days before the ill-fated voyage ended has remarkably vouched for its place in history by selling for a record-breaking £300,000 ($400,000) at auction in the UK.

This letter, written by Colonel Archibald Gracie, found its way to an anonymous buyer at the Henry Aldridge and Son auction house in Wiltshire. What truly stands out is that this sale price was five times higher than the initial expectation of £60,000!

Described as "prophetic", the letter captures a reflective Col Gracie confiding in an acquaintance that he would "await my journey's end"—a chilling premonition as it precedes the "fine ship" verdict of the Titanic.

Dated 10 April 1912, the letter marks the day Gracie embarked on the Titanic from Southampton, merely five days before the ship met its tragic fate in the icy waters of the North Atlantic.

As a first-class passenger aboard this monumental journey, Gracie’s penned words originated from cabin C51, and the letter was mailed when the Titanic anchored in Queenstown, Ireland, on 11 April 1912. It subsequently bore a London postmark the following day, on 12 April. 📮

This poignant piece resonates not only as a historical artifact but as a somber reminder of the nearly 1,500 lives lost in the disaster, out of the approximate 2,200 souls on board sailing towards New York.
