π³The Future of the Dark Hedges: An Iconic Natural Phenomenon in Transition π³ |
The majestic and mystic Dark Hedges, a cherished landmark in County Antrim, are reaching a significant turning point in their existence. According to an announcement by the Causeway Coast and Glens Heritage Trust (CCGHT), these famous trees are almost at the end of their natural lives. π²π³ The CCGHT is stepping in to assume management duties from the Dark Hedges Preservation Trust oversight group. This transition marks a new chapter for the trees, which gained global recognition after being featured in the renowned TV series, Game of Thrones. πΊπ° Planted nearly 250 years ago, these grand beech trees have stood the test of time. However, recent events have taken a toll. Intense weather conditions, notably Storm Isha and Storm Γowyn, along with essential safety maintenance, have unfortunately led to the loss of 13 trees since November 2023. π¬οΈπ§οΈ As the CCGHT steps in to manage this heritage site, there is both hope and action towards preserving what remains of this enchanting avenue. Stay tuned for more updates as efforts continue to secure the legacy of the Dark Hedges for future generations! β¨ |

Hoax Email Declared After Schools Receive βThreateningβ Message π§π¨ Recent Updates: π¨ Police in Northern Ireland have responded swiftly to a situation involving a threatening email sent to nine schools. Though originally alarming, authorities have determined it to be a hoax. π¨βπ« The email was received by three schools each in Strabane, Ballycastle, and Enniskillen on Monday, which led to some of them closing temporarily to ensure the safety of students and staff. π The content of the email remains undisclosed, but police officers are in active communication with school staff and are conducting thorough investigations to rule out any potential threats. π Education Minister Paul Givan expressed his appreciation for the quick action taken by police, adding that ensuring the safety of school communities is a top priority. π΅οΈββοΈ Ch Supt Gillian Kearney assured the community: "We are taking this matter very seriously and acknowledge the concern it has raised among students, parents, and school personnel." The police are collaborating with the Metropolitan Police in London to explore possible connections to similar threats that surfaced earlier in the month. π¬ "Investigating these links is essential to ensure the overall safety and security," a Metropolitan Police spokesperson emphasized. π Rising Demand for Temporary Accommodation in Northern Ireland |
The latest report from the Auditor General highlights a pressing issue that could place unsustainable pressure on homelessness services in Northern Ireland. The demand for temporary accommodation has surged by a staggering 176%, with 4,700 households affected in 2023/24, compared to just 1,700 in 2017. Dealing with this "unprecedented demand" has been costly. The Housing Executive's efforts to manage the situation reached nearly Β£39 million in the budget year 2023-24. According to the report by Auditor General Dorinnia Carville, this financial strain has also hindered initiatives to prioritize homelessness prevention measures. The cost of temporary accommodation consumes more than half of all the Housing Executiveβs spending dedicated to homelessness services. Interestingly, while the majority of funds went into self-contained, single let accommodation, a significant portion was spent on hotels and B&Bs. Last year, this expenditure rose to over Β£12 million, up from approximately Β£7.5 million in 2022-23 and just Β£0.9 million in 2018-19. The report draws attention to the disproportionate spending on hotels and B&Bs, which, although accommodating only around 10% of the households, constitute more than 30% of annual spending on temporary accommodation. This increase in spending has had the additional impact of hindering the Housing Executiveβs efforts to focus on homelessness prevention measures, illustrating the complexities and the urgent need for a strategic response to the housing crisis. π‘πΌ |

Fraudster "Irish Actor" Remanded Over Β£1.5M Banking Scam π°π John Cartmill, commonly referred to as "the Irish actor", has been remanded in custody on charges connected with a significant Β£1.5 million banking fraud. The 45-year-old, from Coolnasilla Park West, Belfast, has employed a sophisticated scheme targeting dissatisfied bank customers through social media platforms. π΅οΈββοΈ According to court reports, Cartmill, during his appearance at Belfast Magistratesβ Court, faced a slew of 63 charges that include fraud by false representation, converting criminal property, and supplying a credit card for fraudulent purposes. These activities are believed to span across 2023 and 2024, impacting major banks like Barclays, HSBC, Santander, Tesco, Bank of Ireland, and Metro Bank, among others. π¦πΌ The deception involved crafting misleading email addresses to mirror legitimate bank domains and posing as bank officials. A cleverly set-up freephone number facilitated redirecting account details and intercepting one-time passcodes to facilitate unauthorized transactions. This approach is said to have heavily contributed to banksβ losses, impacting numerous individual and business clients. An investigative detective highlighted Cartmillβs extensive criminal past, which includes 159 previous convictions, comprising deception, forgery, and fraud offenses, marking him as a recurrent threat actor within banking circles. π Following the judicial revelations in September 2023, the police have actively engaged with several financial institutions to uncover the extent of the monetary losses, estimated to be a colossal Β£1.5 million. This sent a significant warning to banking sectors and necessitated stringent measures against such advanced fraudulent tactics. Read on for the full story here... π°π¨ββοΈ |

Firefighters Battle Another Blaze in the Mourne Mountains π₯π We are relieved to report that a significant gorse fire on Slieve Binnian in the Mourne Mountains has been extinguished. The blaze, which erupted at around 13:30 GMT, required the dedicated efforts of forty-four firefighters, working alongside six fire appliances and a command support unit. Residents were advised by the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) to keep windows and doors closed due to the smoke on Monday afternoon, ensuring community safety amidst the blaze. We are pleased to confirm that the fire was brought under control and extinguished by 18:30, with all personnel leaving the scene by 20:00. This incident comes on the heels of two other fires in the vicinity last week, occurring near Silent Valley and Castlewellan. It is particularly concerning that the fire near Castlewellan is believed to have been started deliberately. The Natural Hazards Partnership had previously issued an amber warning for wildfires in Northern Ireland last Friday, citing dry and breezy conditions which have alarmingly heightened the risk of ignition. We thank the brave firefighters and emergency services for their tireless work in protecting our communities and urge everyone to stay vigilant and adhere to safety advisories during this high-risk period.ππ |

The Mayo native articulated, "I stand by what I said in my first video; this new video will clarify any points that were just misunderstood, and this will be my last word on it." He reassured his followers, saying it's the last time he'll dwell on the topic before he returns to his usual dynamic and entertaining content, stating that he'll be "having the craic" again. π Garron humbly shared with his devoted audience, "I needed to take a few days away. There was a lot of stuff happening online, as I'm sure many of you know. I just couldn't stop myself from looking at it, and engaging with it wasn't productive for me." Welcome back, Garron! We're ready for the fun, laughter, and positivity you consistently bring to each of your videos. |
