Renowned Northern Irish sculptor Tim Shaw RA has unveiled his latest public work, entitled 'Mummer', at the opening of the Royal Academy's 257th Summer Exhibition in London. This striking piece pays homage to the traditional Irish mummers, performers known for their masked and costumed folk plays.

The unveiling was attended by the Armagh Rhymers, one of Ireland's most celebrated traditional music and theatre ensembles. Their presence underscored the deep cultural significance of Shaw's work, bridging contemporary art with ancient performance traditions.

Shaw's 'Mummer' is part of a broader vision to install a series of ten such sculptures along the south Armagh border, near former army lookouts. These silent sentinels are envisioned as symbols of reconciliation and peace, standing in areas once marked by conflict. Shaw, born in Belfast in 1964 and elected to the Royal Academy in 2013, has a history of creating thought-provoking public art that resonates with historical and cultural themes.

The Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition, held annually since 1769, showcases a diverse array of contemporary works, including prints, paintings, films, photography, sculpture, and architectural pieces. This year's exhibition, coordinated by sculptor Ann Christopher RA, runs from June 18 to August 18, 2024, under the theme 'Making Space.' Shaw's 'Mummer' stands out as a poignant reflection on space, history, and cultural identity.

The Armagh Rhymers have a longstanding relationship with Shaw. In November 2021, they welcomed six bronze sculptures created by Shaw, capturing the essence of their performances. These pieces were featured in the 2020 Royal Academy of Arts Summer Show in London and later celebrated in Armagh. The Rhymers' performances, characterized by their colorful costumes and evocative storytelling, have been a source of inspiration for Shaw's work.

The unveiling of 'Mummer' not only highlights Shaw's artistic prowess but also brings attention to the rich cultural tapestry of Northern Ireland. The collaboration between Shaw and the Armagh Rhymers serves as a testament to the enduring power of art and performance in fostering understanding and unity.

As the Summer Exhibition continues, visitors are encouraged to experience 'Mummer' firsthand and reflect on the layers of history and culture it represents. The exhibition is open to the public until August 18, 2024, offering a unique opportunity to engage with contemporary art that speaks to both past and present.
