Summer schemes for Special Education in Northern Ireland will continue.

Summer schemes to no longer be scrapped.

In a recent statement, the Education Authority (EA) announced a "workable solution" that will enable special school summer schemes to proceed this year.

They emphasized that the primary concern remains the safety and well-being of children and young people, and that the EA will collaborate with special school principals to prioritize planning for the summer schemes.

Additionally, the EA stated that engagement will continue to develop and establish a robust and stable model for year-round health care provision in special schools.

Earlier, on Friday, Education Minister Paul Givan directed the EA to explore its options regarding the summer schemes.

A recall petition initiated by the Alliance Party received support from Sinn Féin, SDLP, and the TUV.

Previously, the EA had announced the cancellation of the summer schemes due to concerns about the adequacy of health care provision for vulnerable participating children.

The Department of Health had earlier described the EA's decision as "highly regrettable."

The Northern Ireland Assembly confirmed that members were planning to meet on Tuesday to discuss the issue.

In recent developments, the EA has been actively addressing the increasing demand for special educational needs (SEN) services.

Over the past five years, there has been a 230% increase in specialist classroom places for children with SEN, with over 4,000 additional places created across Northern Ireland during this period.

Furthermore, the EA has published action plans for each of Northern Ireland's 40 special schools, outlining projected demand and detailing short, medium, and long-term capital works to meet that demand.

These initiatives reflect a concerted effort to enhance support for children with special educational needs and ensure the continuation of vital programs like the summer schemes.
