Exploring energy bill reduction and Northern Ireland cost of living challenges |
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer faced pressing questions from Northern Ireland's political leaders regarding the escalating cost of living crisis during a meeting ahead of the UK-Ireland summit in Cork.
First Minister Michelle O'Neill emphasised the severe financial strain on families, stating that many are "really struggling" due to rising expenses. She urged the Prime Minister to consider Northern Ireland's unique challenges, particularly the heavy reliance on heating oil, which has seen significant price hikes.
The surge in heating oil costs has been exacerbated by international conflicts, notably in the Middle East, leading to increased energy expenses for households. Recognising that nearly two-thirds of Northern Ireland homes depend on heating oil, the Prime Minister acknowledged the need for "fair, transparent, and justifiable" pricing that doesn't exploit working people.
DUP leader Gavin Robinson highlighted the delay in implementing an £81 million fund intended to reduce energy bills, expressing concern over the unutilised resources. He noted that all households are set to receive a £30 annual reduction in electricity bills as part of a UK government scheme. However, the Department for the Economy indicated that new legislation is required to introduce the scheme, potentially delaying its operation until later this year or next.
SDLP leader Claire Hanna criticised the handling of oil prices by the executive, pointing out the dysfunction in addressing the cost of living crisis. She emphasised the anxiety among residents about heating and other financial shocks.
Alliance Party leader Naomi Long discussed the instability in home heating oil pricing and the broader cost of living crisis. She advocated for both short-term interventions and long-term investments in alternative fuel options to alleviate the burden on consumers.
UUP leader Jon Burrows addressed the impact of heating oil prices and proposed defense spending investments in Northern Ireland to create jobs. He also engaged in a frank conversation about legacy issues with the Prime Minister.
The meeting underscored the urgent need for tailored solutions to Northern Ireland's cost of living challenges, with leaders calling for immediate action to support struggling households. |
