Northern Ireland weather latest forecast

Cold weather set to return this week

As March progresses, Northern Ireland is experiencing a shift back to colder conditions, with rain and potential wintry showers on the horizon.

This evening, expect overcast skies with light rain moving southeastward.

Overnight, the cloud cover will persist, bringing patchy rain that may intensify over southern counties. Southwesterly winds, fresh to strong, are anticipated to ease by morning. Temperatures are expected to drop to a minimum of 6°C.

On Tuesday, rain in southern areas is forecasted to clear by morning. However, after a dry start elsewhere, showers are likely to develop from the west, some of which could be heavy. The maximum temperature is projected to reach 11°C.

Looking ahead to Wednesday through Friday, the weather pattern remains unsettled.

Wednesday may bring showers, occasionally turning wintry.

Thursday is expected to be mostly dry and bright, though light rain could arrive later in the day.

Friday should see a mix of sunshine and a few showers.

Historically, March in Northern Ireland is characterised by cool temperatures and frequent rainfall. Daytime highs typically hover around 9°C, with nighttime lows near 2°C.

On average, there are about 19 days with some rainfall, accumulating approximately 78 mm of precipitation throughout the month. Sunshine is limited, averaging around 3 hours per day. Snowfall is uncommon, with fewer than two snowy days on average in March.

However, forecasts for March 2026 indicate a slight increase in temperatures, approximately 0.8°C above the historical average. Despite this, the region continues to experience significant rainfall, with over 20 rainy days and an average total precipitation of 426.7 mm.

Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest forecasts and prepare for variable conditions, including the possibility of wintry showers. It's prudent to dress in layers and keep rain gear handy to navigate the unpredictable weather.

As always, staying informed through reliable weather updates will help in planning daily activities and ensuring safety during this transitional period.
