Northern Ireland's women's senior football team has a new manager. |
Michael McArdle has been appointed as the new manager of the Northern Ireland senior women's football team.
McArdle transitions from his role as Head of Elite Women's Football at the Scottish Football Association, bringing over 25 years of coaching experience to his new position.
His extensive background includes 17 years in Scotland's professional football scene, where he has served as head coach, assistant coach, and academy leader across various elite clubs and development programs.
Notably, McArdle has managed approximately 200 senior matches in both men's and women's professional football in Scotland and has gained international coaching experience over the past three years.
Recognized as a collaborative leader, McArdle excels in player development, building high-performance environments, and supporting players as they transition to senior and international football.
His appointment comes at a pivotal time for women's football in Northern Ireland, with a new generation of talent emerging through the national pathway and the implementation of the Irish Football Association's 'Together We Thrive' strategy for women's and girls' football.
McArdle, who will commence his new role on April 1, expressed his enthusiasm: "History and ambition both attracted me to this role, alongside a strong alignment of values and the challenge ahead."
He emphasized the honor he feels in serving the Irish FA and contributing to the growth of women's football in Northern Ireland.
McArdle highlighted the team's transitional phase, noting the exciting young talent developing at the international level while maintaining competitiveness.
He aims to support these players by establishing elite-level structures to transform potential into consistent national performance standards.
He looks forward to working with the players and maximizing the limited time available during international windows to instill core principles and support player development between camps in collaboration with clubs and national programs.
McArdle's goal is to bridge the gap between club success and the unique demands of international football, emphasizing technical precision and mental resilience under pressure.
He assured supporters that they can expect a team that is disciplined, brave in possession, and relentless without the ball, reflecting the hardworking character that defines Northern Ireland teams.
Angela Platt, Director of Women's Football at the Irish FA, expressed excitement about McArdle's appointment, citing his leadership and knowledge of the game in Northern Ireland, along with his proven track record in developing players.
She believes he will be an excellent cultural fit for both the team and the wider association, particularly in supporting the ambitions outlined in the 'Together We Thrive' strategy.
Platt also extended gratitude to interim manager Kris Lindsay for his diligent and professional delivery of the first senior women's camp of 2026.
Aaron Hughes, Technical Director at the Irish FA, expressed confidence that McArdle brings the experience and expertise required to further develop the senior women's team.
He highlighted McArdle's ability to build a clear footballing pathway, align youth and senior programs, and create an environment where players can continue to progress and perform at the highest level.
Patrick Nelson, Chief Executive of the Irish FA, welcomed McArdle with great optimism, noting that the emerging young talent within the pathway makes this appointment significant and represents a tremendous opportunity for both McArdle and the women's game in Northern Ireland.
Conrad Kirkwood, President of the Irish FA, pointed out that McArdle will take a holistic approach to the role, working not only with the senior team but also supporting the development of players across the pathway, helping them progress towards representing Northern Ireland at the highest level of the women's game.
McArdle also had a message for the fans, acknowledging the importance of their support to the team's success.
He assured that the players always give their all to make the fans proud and looks forward to feeling the energy of the Green and White Army as they continue their journey together. |
