Irish whiskey experts shine on the world stage

Northern Ireland distilleries from Bushmills to Hinch

Northern Ireland's distilleries are stepping into the global spotlight, blending rich heritage with modern innovation to captivate whiskey enthusiasts worldwide.

Bushmills Distillery, established in 1784, stands as a testament to this enduring legacy, producing renowned Irish whiskey that continues to set industry standards.

In recent years, a wave of new distilleries has emerged, each contributing unique flavors and stories to the region's whiskey narrative.

McConnell's Distillery in Belfast, for instance, has revitalized a historic brand dating back to 1776.

In April 2024, they inaugurated a state-of-the-art facility within the restored Crumlin Road Gaol, blending historical ambiance with contemporary distilling techniques.

This £30 million investment is poised to produce 500,000 liters of pure alcohol annually and aims to attract 100,000 visitors each year.

Similarly, Wild Atlantic Distillery in County Tyrone has made significant strides.

In March 2025, they launched their IslandMen Irish Whiskey, marking the first whiskey distilled in the Tyrone/Derry region since 1921.

Plans are underway for a new purpose-built distillery and visitor center along the A5, with a projected annual production of 600,000 liters.

These developments underscore the dynamic growth of Northern Ireland's distilling sector.

Beyond production, distilleries are enhancing the visitor experience.

The Dunadry Hotel & Gardens unveiled 'The Cellar' in September 2024, a £100,000 investment transforming the hotel's original working cellar into a venue showcasing an extensive range of premium Irish whiskeys and fine wines.

This initiative reflects a broader trend of integrating whiskey tourism with hospitality.

Tourism Northern Ireland's 'Embrace a Giant Taste of October' campaign in 2025 further highlighted this synergy.

Twelve distilleries participated, offering events that paired their spirits with local culinary delights, thereby promoting regional tourism and the local food and drink industry.

These collaborative efforts not only celebrate Northern Ireland's distilling heritage but also position it as a vibrant hub for whiskey tourism.

As Northern Ireland's distilleries continue to innovate and expand, they not only honor a storied past but also craft a promising future, solidifying the region's place on the world whiskey stage.
