Irish Presidential Election Set for October 24, 2025

Candidates Rush to Secure Nominations as Deadline Approaches

Exclusive

The Irish presidential election is officially scheduled for Friday, October 24, 2025, marking a pivotal moment in the nation's political landscape.

Minister for Housing James Browne confirmed the date, initiating a 21-day window for candidate nominations, which will close at noon on Wednesday, September 24.

To qualify for the ballot, aspirants must secure endorsements from either 20 Oireachtas members or four local authorities.

Additionally, candidates must be Irish citizens aged 35 or older.

With the nomination deadline looming, the political arena is witnessing a flurry of activity.

Independent TD Catherine Connolly announced her candidacy on July 11, garnering support from the Social Democrats, People Before Profit, and several independent Oireachtas members.

Her campaign officially launched on July 16.

In the Fine Gael camp, Heather Humphreys emerged as the party's candidate after Mairead McGuinness withdrew due to health concerns.

Humphreys, a seasoned politician, is expected to bring significant experience to the race.

Fianna Fáil has yet to finalize its candidate.

Speculation surrounds figures like former Dublin Gaelic football manager Jim Gavin and MEP Billy Kelleher.

Party leader Micheál Martin has expressed support for Gavin, though internal consensus remains elusive.

Sinn Féin is deliberating its approach, with leader Mary Lou McDonald indicating a decision will be made by September 20.

Potential candidates include John Finucane and Rose Conway-Walsh.

Several independent candidates are also vying for nominations.

Businessman Gareth Sheridan and meteorologist Joanna Donnelly are actively seeking support from local authorities to secure their places on the ballot.

The role of the Irish president is largely ceremonial, serving as the head of state and representing Ireland at various national and international events.

Only citizens residing in the Republic of Ireland are eligible to vote in presidential elections.

Incumbent President Michael D. Higgins, who has served two terms since his inauguration in 2011, is not eligible for re-election.

His tenure will conclude on November 11, 2025.

As the election date approaches, the political landscape is set for dynamic developments, with candidates striving to secure nominations and present their visions for Ireland's future.

Voters are encouraged to stay informed and participate in this significant democratic process.
