Home heating oil prices and oil price comparison in Northern Ireland

Recent escalations in the Middle East have led to a significant surge in home heating oil prices across Northern Ireland. The conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran has disrupted global oil supplies, causing local prices to spike.

 

According to recent reports, the average cost of 900 litres of home heating oil in Northern Ireland has increased by over £100 since Friday, February 27. This sharp rise is attributed to the geopolitical tensions affecting crude oil availability.

 

The Consumer Council has noted that crude oil prices are "rising and remain unpredictable in the short term" due to the ongoing conflict. Raymond Gormley, Head of Energy Policy at the Consumer Council, emphasized that Northern Ireland's reliance on imported home heating oil makes it vulnerable to volatile global markets. He stated that geopolitical tensions can result in price fluctuations, impacting consumers directly.

 

In response to the crisis, eight OPEC+ nations, including Saudi Arabia and Russia, announced a collective production increase of 206,000 barrels per day in April.

 

However, experts emphasised that physical access to trade routes is more critical than production volume during such disruptions. Iran, which exports about 1.6 million barrels a day mainly to China, may be unable to fulfill its commitments, potentially forcing China to tap strategic reserves or import more from Russia.

 

The Consumer Council advises consumers to shop around for the best price, join heating oil buying groups, consider pre-payment schemes, and order in bulk if possible. These strategies can help mitigate the impact of rising prices on household budgets.
