Home heating oil distributor in Northern Ireland with pre tax profits tripled |
Before huge surge in fuel prices |
Pre-tax profits at Northern Ireland's largest independent oil distributor have nearly tripled to £4.2 million, despite a £10 million drop in turnover.
This surge in profits at Nicholl Oils, based in Greysteel, occurred before the recent escalation in home heating oil prices due to Middle East conflicts.
The company's accounts for the year ending May 2025 reveal that, even with a 5% decrease in turnover—from £259 million to £247 million—pre-tax profits rose from £1.45 million to £4.2 million.
This growth is attributed to reduced administrative expenses and a significant drop in joint-venture losses.
The strategic report highlights the company's resilience in an extremely price-competitive market, emphasizing its ability to adapt to fluctuating base oil prices and associated risks.
The directors expressed satisfaction with the financial performance and confidence in the company's future prospects.
However, the landscape has shifted dramatically since these figures were reported.
As of early March 2026, the average price for 500 litres of home heating oil in Northern Ireland has surged to £555.59, a stark increase from £307.38 just a week prior.
This 81% hike is largely due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly the conflict involving Iran, which has disrupted global oil supplies.
The Consumer Council reports that some suppliers have quoted prices exceeding £600 for 500 litres, reflecting the volatility in the market.
In response to the crisis, Finance Minister John O'Dowd has called on the UK government to provide direct financial support to Northern Ireland residents, emphasizing that the estimated relief scheme costs are beyond the Stormont Executive's capacity.
Approximately 62.5% of Northern Ireland households rely on home heating oil, making the region particularly vulnerable to such price fluctuations.
The Consumer Council advises consumers to shop around and compare prices from multiple suppliers, as rates can vary significantly.
They also recommend considering bulk purchases or delaying orders if possible, to mitigate the impact of the current price surge.
As the situation continues to evolve, both consumers and suppliers are urged to stay informed and adapt to the rapidly changing market conditions. |
