Belfast is set to make history as the first city in Northern Ireland to host the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann twice, with events scheduled for both 2026 and 2027.
The announcement was made in Dublin on Saturday, 7 March 2026, following a meeting of the Ardchomhairle of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann.
This decision underscores Belfast's growing reputation as a premier destination for major cultural festivals and international gatherings.
Organized in partnership with Belfast City Council and Ards CCÉ, the eight-day festival is expected to attract over 800,000 visitors.
The event will feature a rich tapestry of traditional music, song, dance, and language, including All-Ireland competitions, concerts, céilís, and cultural programs.
As preparations for the 2026 Fleadh gain momentum, organizers have unveiled an exciting lineup for the opening ceremony.
Renowned musician Sharon Shannon and her Big Band will headline the main stage outside Belfast City Hall on Sunday, 2 August 2026.
Known for her electrifying performances and genre-blending collaborations, Shannon's presence is set to ignite an energetic week of festivities.
Joining her on the famous Gig Rig stage will be award-winning ensemble Goitse, former All-Ireland champions Blackwater Ceili Band, and Belfast's own McPeake.
The opening day will also showcase performances by school choirs and cross-community groups, offering free entertainment that sets the tone for a week of shared celebrations across the city.
The dual announcement has been met with enthusiasm from local leaders.
Deputy Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Paul Doherty, expressed his delight, stating, "Hosting the Fleadh again in 2027 is a tremendous honor for Belfast and underscores its status as the island's only UNESCO City of Music."
He emphasized the substantial tourism and economic impact the two-year staging will bring, supporting local businesses, hospitality providers, and cultural organizations.
Dr. Labhrás Ó Murchú, Director-General of Comhaltas, highlighted the strong partnership with Belfast City Council and the city's world-class venues like the Waterfront and Ulster Hall.
He noted that Belfast is poised to elevate the performances and atmosphere of the Fleadh to new heights.
Niall McClean, Chairperson of Ards CCÉ, remarked on the privilege of hosting the event in both 2026 and 2027.
He observed a remarkable surge in interest in Irish traditional music, song, and dance, with increased enrollment in classes, particularly around Belfast.
McClean emphasized that the Fleadh serves as a catalyst to inspire older generations to pass on their skills and for new generations to carry these timeless traditions forward.
As Belfast prepares to welcome the world to celebrate Irish music and culture, the city stands ready to showcase its vibrant heritage and inclusive spirit.
Residents and visitors alike can look forward to an unforgettable experience that honors tradition while embracing the future.
