Belfast's beloved Commercial Court is set to dazzle once again as its iconic umbrella installation returns, promising a display that's bigger, brighter, and more captivating than ever.
After a period of absence due to essential refurbishments, the vibrant canopy is making a grand comeback just in time for St. Patrick's Day and the bustling tourist season.
The original installation, featuring 21 illuminated umbrellas, became a symbol of Belfast's creativity and charm, drawing countless visitors and serving as a picturesque backdrop for memorable moments.
Notably, it even caught the attention of King Charles and Queen Camilla during their visit in March 2025.
However, after enduring Belfast's unpredictable weather for several years, the umbrellas required some tender loving care.
Local specialists have undertaken a comprehensive refurbishment, doubling the installation's length and increasing the number of umbrellas to 42.
Each umbrella has been treated with a high-performance architectural coating designed to withstand the elements, ensuring the display remains vibrant for years to come.
The enhanced installation now incorporates 500 meters of color-changing lighting, creating a mesmerizing visual experience both day and night.
In addition to the umbrellas, 1,600 red polyanthus have been planted in flower baskets along the street, adding a splash of color as the city welcomes the arrival of spring.
The umbrellas are set to turn green for St. Patrick's Day, offering a vibrant visual celebration in the heart of the Cathedral Quarter.
A new neon artwork titled 'Rainbow's End' will also be unveiled at the bottom of the lane, accompanied by a gold bench nearby.
Prominent pub owner Willie Jack expressed his enthusiasm for the return of the umbrellas, emphasizing their role in bringing positivity to the city.
He noted that the umbrellas have become a symbol of Belfast's sense of fun and creativity, and after facing every type of weather imaginable, they deserved some attention.
His wife, Joanne, highlighted the perfect timing of the refurbishment, aligning with longer days, the beginning of the tourist season, and numerous upcoming events in the city.
She looks forward to seeing the street buzzing again, with brighter days ahead for Belfast and plenty of people stopping to enjoy the view.
Paul O'Hare, manager of the Duke of York bar, humorously remarked that it felt like it rained for 40 days and nights when the umbrellas were taken down.
He hopes their return will bring some welcome sunshine and brighten people's days as they walk down the street.
Local photographer Kris Samson emphasized the significance of the umbrellas as one of Belfast's best attractions.
He described them as a statement that brings people to the area and noted that their absence would be felt, but in the bigger picture, their return will be even better.
The return of the umbrella installation is a testament to Belfast's commitment to preserving and enhancing its cultural landmarks.
As the city continues to evolve, the rejuvenated display serves as a beacon of creativity and resilience, inviting both locals and visitors to experience the unique charm of Commercial Court once more. |
