Celebrating Northern Ireland's Community Champions: BBC Make a Difference Awards 2025

Honoring the Unsung Heroes Who Enrich Our Communities

The BBC Make a Difference Awards 2025 have shone a spotlight on the remarkable individuals and groups across Northern Ireland who dedicate themselves to enhancing their communities.

These awards, now encompassing the entire UK, recognize the selfless efforts of those who make a tangible impact in their local areas.

On Friday, September 26, the winners were announced live on BBC Radio Ulster's Vinny and Cate show during a special event at BBC Blackstaff studios in Belfast.

**Volunteer Award Winner**

Lucy McMullan, at 91 years old, has been the driving force behind the Caledon Open Door Club in County Tyrone for over four decades.

Her unwavering commitment provides music, meals, and companionship to the elderly in this rural community, embodying the spirit of volunteerism.

**Young Hero Award Winner**

Seanain McCallion, a 13-year-old from Derry, has raised thousands of pounds for local children's charities through events she organized herself.

Her openness about her journey breaks down barriers with laughter and heart, serving as a shining example of resilience and generosity.

**Great Neighbour Award Winner**

Bridie McCullagh is the heart of the Rouskey Community Group in County Tyrone.

She leads with passion, humor, and care—organizing everything from dinners for those unable to leave their homes to training and community events.

**Active Award Winner**

After a life-changing injury at 16, Jennifer Smyth from Derry turned adversity into action by founding Northern Ireland's first neuro-focused gym.

Jenn's Gym offers a safe, inclusive space for people with disabilities to move, connect, and thrive.

**Fundraiser Award Winner**

For more than 40 years, Des Keenan from Cookstown has quietly transformed lives through tireless fundraising, founding care services, and creating shared community spaces.

As an 80-year-old cancer survivor living with Parkinson's, Des remains unstoppable.

**Green Award Winner**

Noticing a lack of well-being opportunities for Key Stage 3 pupils, Aimee Mallon from Derry restored a school greenhouse and developed projects that included gardening, seed swapping, and environmental education to create a nurturing, inclusive space for pupils and teachers alike.

**Community Group Award Winner**

Support2gether, based in Omagh, provides life-saving care for mothers facing antenatal and postnatal depression and anxiety.

This small team offers one-to-one support, counseling, peer groups, and educational outreach.
